I am a begginer at the guitar. I keep playing too near the frets causing a buzzing sound...?

My left hands keep pressing too near the frets causing me to hear an undesirable buzzing sound. What shall I do? My dad plays it very well and I hear no buzzing at all. What shall I do to make sure I am pressing correctly without hurting my fingers or wrist? I have been playin for seeral weeks
