Sundiata Keita lived in the early 13th century. During his life, he overthrew the Ghana Empire and established the Mali Empire in its place which led to the ascendance of the Mandinka people in the region. His accomplishments led to the development of the Epic of Sundiata which is one of the best known stories in West Africa.
