How to tap guitar loudly?

Im trying to learn to play like trace bundy etc and i noticed he is able to tap strings with his fret hand like the high e and maje it loud enough to hear as if he had his finger on the string and picked it. Whenever i try to tap with my fret hand i can barely hear the string at all. How do i do this?
