Vet bill out of control, what can I do?

The dog needed an operation. Cost $1500. That was fine. Before you know it the bill is over $8000! Not to mention that I was not informed of the outrageously growing bill. Aren't their any retrictions on how this can happen. Do I have any recourse? Does any one know where I can turn for help?
