Beginner guitar question?

Okay so I've only been playing guitar for a couple of days and I'm taking lessons and stuff but when I look up chords to songs I like they have the capo on a fret and then the chords are all above the capo. I don't really understand why this is since you could put your fingers anywhere above the capo and it doesn't appear to change sound.
