What can I do to make my super curly thick hair something nice?

My friend got a straight perm, she hasn't straightened her hair in 2 years! And it doesn't damage it, you only get it once, so its just one job and your done. :) It's sorta procey though... I think she said it was 200 or 300 dollars? Yeah:) btw, shes 13
