If you hide your money under the bed (or anywhere else), it will just rot away, but if you invest it or lend it, you get a return. Yes, I know gold doesn't rust and canker worms don't eat it - and Shakespeare knew that, too. He's just saying that treasure that isn't out in the world, doesn't do anyone any good. A person has to spread it around to get any good of it.
