When I'm playing barre chords...?

for instance if I'm playing an E barre chord on the 5th fret, (A Major), and I turn it into A7 chord, I have a lot of trouble getting the 7th, it always seems to mute itself. I've been playing guitar for just over a year and I assumed this problem would go away, but it's not. Any help would be very much appreciated :)
