Help me understand pull-offs and hammer-ons?

Pull offs can either be like hammer ons just sort of in reverse where you would pull off while the string still rings on the note further up on the frets or to stop the vibrating of the string and pluck a different note... At least thats how see it.. Im self taught i just try to figure it out on my own...... id side with the dude after me he is much better
